Anson at Chatham Yard for a refit 1842
HMS Anson
HMS Anson was a 74 Gun Ship of the Line before being refitted as a Convict Transport at Chatham Yard in preparation for her one and only voyage to Tasmania. After her arrival she was used as a Female Prison Factory at anchor in the Harbour at Hobart. Hence the Anson off Domain which is a sketch by His Honour the former Chief Justice, Sir W Lambert Dobson, published in The Tasmanian Mail 11th January, 1896, p 17. She was broken up and sold for scrap between 1851 and 1853.
Below is a list of Convicts aboard HMS Anson on voyage 227 when she sailed from Southampton 1st October 1843 and Landing at Hobart Town 4th February 1844 under Captain Coglin.
The only cabin passenger was Captain Cockcroft of the 58th Regiment. Also aboard was non fare paying "Schoolmaster to Convicts" Peter John Jarbo and wife Emma (my GGG Grandparents) who were married just before departure.
